camping in the olympics: day 3

Getting behind in my posting (as I'm sure you're all well aware). Anyway, back to our camping trip.

On Saturday we got up early, got ready, had a bowl of oatmeal and headed to Port Townsend to catch our boat. We booked an 8 hour cruise on the Puget Sound Express. It's kind of like a ferry to the islands of the Puget Sound but also makes stops for marine life. We were hoping to see orcas, but were sadly disappointed that they didn't show up. It took almost two hours to get to San Juan Island.

On our way there we saw some puffins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions.

Then we wandered through some of the islands. They are a lot more rocky that I was picturing. Lots of cliffs and trees.

This is the entrance into Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Lots of vacation homes and rentals. Friday Harbor reminded me of Put-in-Bay without all the party atmosphere.

The boat dropped us off for two hours of exploring Friday Harbor. We basically had enough time to find a restaurant and eat lunch, walk through a couple of shops, and get an ice cream cone before we headed back.

On our way back to Port Townsend we did get to see a couple of minke whales. They are pretty fast and hard to photograph, but I managed to snag a couple pictures. I love the sound whales make when they come up for air.

After we got back we roasted a couple hot dogs over the fire and called it a day. It was a perfect day to spend on the water.
