In our handwriting lesson today the kids are supposed to write a little story about what they want to be when they grow up. I'm going around the room asking each one what it is they want to be and I'm making a gigantic list of career possibilities on the board. We've heard federal agent, missionary, lifeguard, and pediatrician, and then this is the conversation that followed:
E: I want to be a veterinarian.
L: E, that's awesome! You want to go in the Army?!?!?
(weird looks from the crowd; teacher's eyebrows raise)
Mrs. B: E, could you tell us what a veterinarian does?
E: They take care of pets.
Mrs. B: That's right. A veterinarian is a pet doctor. L, the word you were thinking of is veteran.
L: Oh, I just got confused!
Out of the mouths of babes. . .
