At Crossroads where I teach, they always have an end of the year program. It was something new to me, and I had to think long and hard about what I was going to have my class do. There's the standards: 6th grade, quoting a few chapters from James (they memorized the entire book); 4th grade, signing to a Christian song in their tie-dyed T-shirts; 1st grade, the Crayon Song. The challenge was before me. . . I had to come up with something unique and creative that would get my own stamp of approval.
So I was chatting with my aide one Thursday as she was glueing the handles on to our cereal box suitcases. And she goes, "So, are you using these for the closing program? Gonna have all the kids come on the stage and sing So Long, Farewell, Adios and Goodbye?" And I said, "No, but you've just given me some inspiration." And in about the next 20 minutes or so, while my kids were in music, I rewrote the lyrics to another Sound of Music song.
I present to you. . . A Few of Our Favorite Things
Our year is over and we've learned a ton
Don't think for a minute we didn't have fun
With Mrs. Bergland teaching us all
Second grade's done and we're ready for fall
Brain breakfast each morning to get ourselves going
Addition and subtraction facts our minds are now knowing
Chapter books daily and stories galore
Made us come back everyday for more
Building our lives on a firm foundation
We learned the facts of multiplication
Special sounds and spelling words
Second grade's awesome I'm sure you have heard
When the tests come
When the stars flip
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my second grade year
And then I don't feel so bad
A trip to the End of the Oregon Trail
Our pen pal letters come in the mail
Memory verses and telling time
Counting out quarters and nickels and dimes
I know all about the solar system
Sara and Kiya moved and we miss them
Ohio is the Buckeye State
Our teacher was born there she says that it's great
When the tests come
When the stars flip
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my second grade year
And then I don't feel so bad
The kids loved it. The parents loved it. The crowd cheered with wild enthusiasm before we were even finished singing. I thought it was quite catchy myself. So much, in fact, that I now can't get the stupid thing out of my head.

Bravo and well done! It sounds like it was a hit. Takes me back to good ole Chatterbox during our song sessions. :)
