chopping down the cherry tree

So we had this dying cherry tree in our backyard. It barely grew any leaves this year. We knew it was time to be adults, get a few quotes, pay a lot of money, and say farewell. Today was the day.

Before:
X marks the spot. Or in this case, the tree.
Three guys from Pa's Tree Service came and took her down.
They hit the house with this branch. And underneath that sucker is one of my prized hydrangeas. It seems to have survived.
Didn't take all that long til they were down to one final branch. . .

which looked like this from the front of the house. I wouldn't do that job in a million years.
Now it's time for some campfires. I see a firepit in our future.
After: a much sunnier backyard.  (Of course it helps that the sun came out and burned off all the clouds.)
And check it out, our heart-shaped tree!
We also had this big tree limbed up. There were some dead branches and a few of Wilson's throw toys that needed to come down. We've lost some shade on our deck but gained a sunnier garden. The dining room also has a lot more light now.
The stump grinder guy came this evening and now we have a lot of work to do before my big birthday bash on Saturday night. We'll be celebrating the big 4-0 with polka dots and costco cake. Good times. Today I went through about 40 years of pictures to select a few to hang up. Oh. my. word. Those will have to be in a blog post all of their own.

WOW...the picture with just one branch sticking out and the guy way up there makes you realize how tall that tree was. YAHOO for sunlight.

Wendy,

Kinda strange question to your blog post, but I am seriously considering hiring Pa's Tree Service to remove a huge fir tree much like the one you have pictured being limbed up. I've only found a few reviews of them online when doing a google search. Your blog came up also under that search, hence what brought me here. I would appreciate any input you could give me regarding this company. I appreciate your help.

Evalyn,
We were pleased overall with the crew from Pa's. They got the job done, were pretty careful about making sure the branches and limbs were secure before cutting, and cleaned up well afterward. Our only complaint (if you want to call it that) was that the guy didn't show up for the time he said he'd come for an estimate (he apologized, said they were swamped, and we rescheduled) and they were late getting there the morning of the job, maybe 30-40 minutes. We had 3 or 4 estimates and got the best deal with Pa's. It was the only one that included stump grinding in the quote. Hope this helps. ~wendy
