Last Sunday 505 swept me away to Long Beach on the Washington coast. We knew the weather report wasn't all that great: rain. But we went anyway. (Secretly, I think he chose that location because he could be oh-so-manly and drive the Jeep onto the beach.) Much to our surprise, as we were sitting and watching the waves pound on to the shore, the sun came out, and stayed out, the entire time we were there. It was blissful! Oh, and did I mention the part about the sea gull almost crashing itself into our windshield? That was pretty exciting.
Then on down the road a bit we saw a sign for the North Head Lighthouse. Always a sucker for lighthouses, we hung a right and headed on down the road. It was a short walk to the cliff. So pretty, don't you think?
Coming around the corner you could see the top part of it.
And wa-la, there she is.
It was last restored in 1984, and as you can see, it's beginning to look a bit crumbly.

This lighthouse was built in 1898 because ships coming from the north to the Columbia River were having a hard time seeing the other lighthouse just south at Cape Disappointment until it was nearly too late. I also discovered that this location is one of the windiest places in the world. Winds have been clocked at up to 126 mph. There was even a duck that got blown of course a bit and ended up crashing through the plate glass in the lantern room and knocking off a chip of the lens. Now that's what I call wind!
Then we left and drove south toward Astoria. Mr. 505 sees a route we've never taken before, so he decides to go for it. Lucky us, we ended up finding a beautiful lookout point called Beards Hollow in Cape Disappointment. Great spot for whale watching, by the way. And no, we didn't see any that day.

It was a beautiful day. Well, at the beach anyway. It rained the whole way there and the whole way back.

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. I always thought it would be fun to live and run a lighthouse. Never know....maybe one day when the kids are grown Paul and I could retire to a lighthouse.
That was an awesome trip. :) Glad you were able to do that! I love going places I have never been before, too. :) Can't get over that wind speed at the lighthouse!
